Valentine’s Day 2027 Falls on a Sunday: Dates, Deadlines and What to Send

Red roses and a blank card: the two things every Valentine's Day order needs, one of them waiting for your words.

Valentine’s Day 2027 lands on Sunday, February 14, and the next day, Monday, February 15, is Presidents’ Day. That makes a three-day weekend with the most romantic day of the year sitting in the middle of it. For couples, it is a gift of a calendar. For anyone who sends flowers, it changes the plan in a few useful ways, and it is still more than three months away, which is exactly the right time to start thinking about it.

📅 The Calendar for Valentine’s Week 2027

  • Friday, February 12. The last regular workday before the holiday. This is the day to send flowers to an office, a school or any workplace, because on Sunday the recipient will not be there.
  • Saturday, February 13. A good day for deliveries to a home, especially for couples who plan to celebrate on the Saturday night of the long weekend.
  • Sunday, February 14. Valentine’s Day itself. We deliver seven days a week, including Sundays, so flowers can arrive on the day.
  • Monday, February 15. Presidents’ Day, a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February. Many people have the day off, which makes it a natural second chance for a belated gesture, a quiet dinner, or flowers for someone who spent Valentine’s Day alone or at work.

⏰ When to Order

Valentine’s Day is the one week of the year when we say the same thing to everyone: order early. Our practical calendar for 2027:

  • January: decide what you are sending and to whom. Browsing early beats browsing in a panic.
  • By the end of the first week of February: place the order for the pick of delivery windows and designs.
  • Friday, February 12: the last easy day for work deliveries. After that, think home addresses.
  • Sunday, February 14: possible, but with the narrowest choice, so use it as a backup and not a plan.

Two small tips for any order. Give us the full address and a phone number for the recipient, and tell us if the flowers are a surprise so we do not call them first. Our guide to surprise deliveries explains how to choose between work and home.

📊 What People Actually Buy

In the National Retail Federation’s survey ahead of Valentine’s Day 2026, 55 percent of consumers planned to celebrate. Candy was the most popular gift at 56 percent. Flowers tied with greeting cards for second place at 41 percent each, ahead of an evening out at 39 percent and jewelry at 25 percent. Shoppers were expected to spend $3.1 billion on flowers. The survey also found that the holiday is not only about couples: 33 percent planned gifts for friends, 27 percent for children’s classmates and teachers, 21 percent for co-workers, and a record 35 percent for pets.

That last part matters for a Sunday Valentine’s Day, because the gifts for co-workers, teachers and classmates have to arrive before the weekend. If any of those people are on your list, Friday, February 12 is your day.

📜 Where the Holiday Comes From

Valentine’s Day began as a Christian feast day honoring a martyr named Valentine; the best-known account is of Valentine of Rome, a priest martyred in 269. The day was first tied to romantic love in the 14th century, in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Parliament of Fowls (1382), a poem about birds choosing their mates. By 18th-century England it had grown into an occasion for couples to present flowers, sweets and greeting cards, called valentines.

One popular story is a myth. You will hear that Valentine’s Day replaced the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, with a lottery that paired up couples. Historians say there is no ancient evidence for that lottery. The first descriptions of it appeared in the 15th century, long after Rome, in connection with Valentine’s Day itself.

🌹 What to Send

Roses, if you want the classic. Red roses are the traditional message of romantic love. Our guides to everything about roses and what flowers mean cover colors, quantity and care, and our post on how a rose gets from Ecuador to the kitchen table explains why Valentine’s roses are a logistics feat.

Something other than roses. If the person you are sending to is not a rose person, think tulips, ranunculus, orchids or a mixed bouquet in their favorite colors. Our shared guide to date night flowers has ideas, and so does our romance for her page.

For a guy. Yes, he can get flowers, and our post on sending a guy flowers shows how. If he would rather have a basket, our gifts for him and gift baskets page has wine, gourmet and fruit options.

On a budget. You do not have to spend a lot to say it well. See our flowers and gifts under $50 page, and our guides to romance on a budget and why some flowers cost so much.

Something that lasts. A plant or a bouquet of dried flowers can last well beyond February. Our guide to dried and preserved flowers covers when they are worth it.

💕 Valentine’s Day Is Not Only for Couples

A third of shoppers buy for friends, and many more for family and co-workers. A small bouquet for a friend, a mother or grandmother, a teacher or the person who runs your office is one of the easiest and most welcome gestures on the calendar. If you are sending several, mixed or small arrangements are the practical choice, and a Friday delivery will reach the people who are at work or school.

✍️ The Card

A good card is short and specific. Name the thing you love, not the holiday. “Thank you for the Sunday morning pancakes” beats “Happy Valentine’s Day” every time. If you are not sure what to write, think of a memory from the past year and start there.

📋 The Short Version

  • Valentine’s Day 2027 is Sunday, February 14, and Monday, February 15 is Presidents’ Day.
  • Send workplace flowers on Friday, February 12, and plan home deliveries for Saturday or Sunday.
  • Order by the end of the first week of February for the best choice, and treat Sunday as a backup.
  • In a 2026 NRF survey, 41 percent of shoppers planned to buy flowers, second only to candy.
  • The Lupercalia lottery is a myth; Chaucer’s 1382 poem is the first recorded link between the day and romance.
  • Roses, tulips, orchids, baskets, plants and under-$50 bouquets all work. Match the gift to the person.
