☔ The Sunday Nobody Plans / El Domingo que Nadie Planea
October in the Portland area has a pattern. A string of pretty days, then one gray, wet Sunday that arrives like it has been waiting. Plans get cancelled, the park is mud, and the whole house wants to stay in. We think that is not a bad thing. A rainy Sunday is one of the best excuses of the year to slow down, and a few small touches can make it feel like a choice and not a consolation prize.
🛋️ Make a Cozy Corner / Haga un Rincón Acogedor
Pick one spot, a couch corner, a chair by the window, or the end of the kitchen table, and make it the place. A blanket, a pillow, a warm light instead of the overhead one, and something to read or watch. Put flowers where you will see them from that spot, not across the room.
🍲 A Pot of Soup / Una Olla de Sopa
Nothing says “staying in” like a pot on the stove. Soup is also generous, a pot makes enough for the week, and the smell fills the house. You do not need a recipe from us, since your family has one already: a caldo, a pozole, a chicken-and-rice, a lentil soup, a bean-and-sausage pot. Whatever your table calls comfort, make a big batch. If you are cooking for company, our guide to what to bring when you are invited to someone’s house has a few ideas for the guest, too.
A candle changes a room on a gray afternoon more than almost anything else. A few safety notes, because the rainy season is also when many households fill up with blankets, throws, and dry decorations: keep flames away from dried flowers, grasses, and fabric, never leave a candle unattended, and keep them out of reach of children and pets. If you have a crowded house, flickering LED candles give you the glow without the worry. If you prefer scent, choose a gentle one, since strong fragrance on top of cooking and flowers can be too much.
🌷 The Flowers: Sturdy, Warm, and Easy / Las Flores: Resistentes, Cálidas y Fáciles
A rainy Sunday is the right day for flowers you do not have to babysit. Chrysanthemums, alstroemeria, and carnations last a week or more with very little attention, and fall colors suit the mood: rust, gold, burgundy, deep pink, and cream. Our guide to mums shows why they are the dependable choice, and our post on why some flowers last longer than others explains the rest. A few small vases in different spots feel cozier than one big arrangement: one by the soup, one in your cozy corner, one by the window where the rain is visible.
🧴 Care in Five Minutes / Cuidado en Cinco Minutos
Rinse the vase, fill it with cool water, strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline, and cut the stems at an angle. Keep the flowers away from the stove and the heater. Change the water every couple of days. Our pro tips have the full version.

🧡 The Short Version / En Resumen
Pick a corner, make a pot of soup, light a candle safely, and put a few small vases of sturdy flowers where you can see them. Then let it rain.
